An ethnogeologist and geoscience-education researcher, Steven guides and contributes to education research activities in the Center. He is Professor of Geology and Education in the School of Earth and Space Exploration and a Senior Sustainability Scientist in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability. His research focuses on the role of sense of place in place-based, digital, and informal geoscience education; and on the ethnogeology of Indigenous and Latinx peoples and their lands in the American Southwest and Latin America. He taught at the Tribal College of the Navajo Nation before joining ASU. Steven holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a M.S. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, a Past-President of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, and the recipient of several awards for excellence in college and university teaching.
